Former campers Brenda Matthews and Leslie Witbeck sing the "Camp Mueller Song." Cleveland's Phillis Wheatley Association opened the overnight camp in what is now the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the 1930s, offering African-American children from the inner-city a chance to experience the great outdoors.
In response to the senseless violence and deaths of so many of Clevelands young men, and the fact that their role models seem to be the gangster rappers and athletes who promote violence through their lyrics and actions; The Phillis Wheatley Association, the NAACP and Cuyahoga Community College developed a leadership camp for young boys between the ages of 10 and 13.
